Now just seven days away from the summer transfer window closing, Arsenal are still without the new centreback their fans crave and their squad requires.
Appearing to have failed in bids for the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Jonny Evans - priced out the market by Valencia and West Brom respectively - Arsene Wenger is running out of time as he attempts to find cover for the injured Per Mertesacker and Gabriel.
And now, with his options reducing by the day, it looks like the Gunners boss has turned his attentions to Old Trafford for his next attempt.

According to a report from The Daily Telegraph's chief football writer Sam Wallace, Arsenal have increased their interest in Phil Jones in recent days after suffering setbacks in pursuit of other targets.
Per the report, the out of favour United defender has been on Arsenal's "list of options" for a while now. Having been told to pay £42 million and £25 million for Mustafi and Evans respectively, it looks like the England international is next on the list of targets.
Jones has started the season out of Jose Mourinho's plans and has widely been linked with a move away from Manchester in recent days, with his price tag set at around £20-25 million.
Until recently, though, it was Stoke City who were the only club thought to have a genuine interest in the much-maligned defender.
Although Arsenal fans are desperate to see Wenger splash the cash and add to a squad that has just one point from the opening two games of the Premier League season, it is fair to say the idea of Phil Jones being the man to fill the void hasn't exactly gone down too well with Gooners on social media.
What's more, again per The Telegraph, Jose Mourinho is ready to reject Arsenal's advances anyway by telling the £100,000-per-week defender that his future remains at Old Trafford for the time being.
