Gerard Pique couldn’t resist the opportunity to take a sly dig at Real Madrid during a Q&A session on Twitter earlier this week.

The defender was asked what kind of Champions League group he wanted for Barcelona this season and responded by naming the route Los Blancos took to their 11th European Cup triumph last season.

“An easy group stage,” Pique responded. “Italy’s 3rd in the round of 16 [AS Roma], Germany’s 8th in the quarters [Wolfsburg], England’s 4th in semis [Manchester City] and the return leg always at home.”

Pique also raised eyebrows with his comments about Arsenal, claiming Arsene Wenger should concentrate on buying “quality” defenders.

But it was his comments on Madrid that caused the biggest stir in Spain - and, needless to say, they didn’t go unnoticed by the players at the Bernabeu.

Cristiano Ronaldo's response to Pique's comments

Cristiano Ronaldo is the first Real star to respond to Pique’s comments - and he did so in style.

The Portuguese superstar beat teammate Gareth Bale and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann to UEFA’s Best Player in Europe award on Thursday and was asked about Pique’s tweet after picking up the individual accolade.

The former Manchester United star is quoted as saying by Cadena SER: “All I can say to him is that he should take a look at the beautiful pictures I’ve uploaded to Facebook and Instagram.”

Pique and Ronaldo's relationship deteriorating?

While a friendship might be stretching it a little, Pique and Ronaldo have always had a relationship based on mutual respect.

They briefly played together at Old Trafford and have remained on good terms ever since, despite the hostilities that exists between Spain’s big two.

But Pique risked irritating Ronaldo when he appeared to copy the three-time Ballon d’Or winner’s ‘calma’ celebration during Barcelona’s open-top bus parade in May.

Reacting to his former teammate’s actions, Ronaldo said in an interview: “Even when others are celebrating, they remember Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Whether it’s good or not, let them talk about Cris.”

Pique shouldn’t be shocked if he finds himself off Ronaldo’s Christmas card list this December.

Is Gerard Pique having a bit of harmless fun - or is he being a bit of an idiot? Have your say by leaving a comment below.
