Manchester United left it late to secure all three points over Hull City at the KCOM Stadium on Saturday evening.

Despite dominating possessions and having significantly more shots than the hosts during the 90 minutes, the Red Devils failed to find a way past Eldin Jakupovic in the Hull goal.

However, the deadlock was eventually broken in the second minute of stoppage-time by second-half substitute Marcus Rashford, who tapped home from close range following excellent work by captain Wayne Rooney.

The match was televised live on BT Sport and, after the match, pundits Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand discussed what Jose Mourinho should do with his team moving forward.

Both players believe that Wayne Rooney has to stay in the team, but Scholes named two United players who are in danger of losing their places in the first-team unless they improve.

Scholes: Martial and Mata have to improve

“I think [Anthony] Martial has to improve,” Scholes said. “I think Juan Mata has to improve.

“They both have great ability, don’t get me wrong, but at this moment I think I’d rather have Marcus [Rashford] and Henrikh [Mkhitaryan] in the team.”

Ferdinand then added: “I think the thing that Mkhitaryan and Rashford give you that the other two don’t, if you want it, is the ability to take a man on the outside as well.

“Martial, too often, wants the ball to feet which is frustrating because he’s so quick. But Rashford will get the ball and ask ‘can you defend against me?’”

Is it a fair assessment?

Both players were underwhelming against the Tigers, but is it fair to say that they deserve to come out the team?

Against Bournemouth, on the opening weekend of the season, Mata scored while Martial provided two assists.

Martial showed glimpses of his class in the second match against Southampton while Mata was also lively.

However, with competition for first-team places at Old Trafford fiercer than it has been for the last few years, one poor performance and United’s stars will be in danger of finding themselves on the subs’ bench.
