Luis Suarez mocks referee during Barcelona's win over Athletic Bilbao

Football News

Luis Suarez is never too far from controversy on a football pitch. Whether it be racist language or expletives directed at the crowd, the Uruguayan’s talent can often be tainted by moments of absurdity.

After all, this is the striker who took three incidents to learn the downside of biting an opponent.

The latest such heat of the moment incident, albeit comparatively minor, involved a referee in Barcelona’s most recent La Liga clash. It appeared that the 29-year-old was somewhat keen to express his disgust.

Narrow win

In the second round of La Liga fixtures this weekend, Barcelona immerged victors in a difficult clash away to Athletic Bilbao.

The reigning champions eventually saw off the home side via Ivan Rakitic’s header. Nonetheless, it proved a tight clash throughout with Bilbao threatening to rob the Catalans of the perfect start.

Not only did the close nature of the fixture leave Barcelona feeling aggrieved, however; but the performance of the referee also. From the Nou Camp side’s perspective anyway.

Suarez reaction

As ever, Suarez was one to express this frustration in typically blatant fashion.

The ex-Liverpool became so incensed that he was recorded calling the official a ‘payaso’ or ‘clown’ in English. Suarez’s slur can be seen below:

It was frustrating night on the whole for Suarez despite having helped to seal the three points. Not only was the Uruguayan left irritated by the referee, but missed a glaring opportunity to seal the win in stoppage time.

Nevertheless, Bilbao proves a prominent scalp for Barca and an early statement in what looks to be a hotly contested title race. Suarez though, hasn’t done himself any favours with yet another erratic comment.
