Just when it was beginning to look like Moussa Sissoko might actually stay at Newcastle following a summer of speculation, he is now set for a return to the Premier League.

Deadline day started with Tottenham reportedly making a move for the French international but there has been a late bid made by a rival Premier League team.

Reminiscent of Willian's move to Stamford Bridge in 2013, Chelsea are hoping to beat their London rivals to the signature of Sissoko.

French publication L'Equipe are reporting that the Blues have opened talks with the 27-year-old's agent and advisors.

Spurs were hoping to be Sissoko's only option to drive Newcastle's asking price of £30 million down but have seen their opening offer of just over £21m rejected.

However, Antonio Conte's interest could now change everything and ruin Spurs chairman Daniel Levy's plans to get the Newcastle midfielder in on the cheap.

Sissoko has been itching for a move away from St James' Park since Rafael Benitez's side were relegated to the Championship back in May.

His performances at Euro 2016 attracted speculation regarding a move to Real Madrid in Spain but the Premier League is now his most probable destination.

The former Toulouse star has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League which could still hand Spurs the advantage but Chelsea's strong start to campaign suggests their absence from Europe's most prestigious competition is unlikely to extend beyond this season.

Sissoko has been granted leave from Didier Deschamps' French training squad to allow him to sort out his future before the transfer window closes tonight.

In the meantime, Chelsea fans have been reacting to news of their latest possible signing on Twitter and are understandably delighted to be beating their rivals to another big deal.
