The Tour de Reunion - a road cycling event on the French overseas island territory of Reunion in the Indian Ocean - wouldn't normally register too highly on even the most ardent cyclist fan's radar.

However, that has changed this evening after a truly bizarre incident near the finish line of today's stage.

As brought to our attention by French journalist Antoine Forestier, the event was plunged into chaos after one spectator purposefully dragged a safety barrier into the middle of the road just as the cyclists were approaching. Scroll down to see the outrageous behaviour caught on camera.

Although some riders were able to swerve to their left just in time to avoid the barrier, several others weren't quite so lucky and met with a painful looking fall after crashing straight into the metal fencing.

The video clearly shows one man sprinting across the road dragging the barrier behind him in what was an intentional attempt to cause some pretty serious damage.

According to reports since, the outrageous and outright dangerous actions of the 'fan' were caused by something that had happened earlier in the race.

Per the Planet Cycling Twitter account, the man who dragged the barrier across the road was actually the father of a cyclist taking part in the Tour de Reunion who had crashed out of today's stage.

Details on exactly what happened after the crazy incident are sketchy at this point, but you have to expect that both race officials and police authorities will have something to say about what happened today.

He might well have been angry at what happened to his son earlier in the race, but that is no excuse for deliberately putting the safety of other riders in danger.
