The Usos are expected to become SmackDown's Tag Team Champions at WWE Backlash

American Alpha have done a fantastic job of bringing the excitement of tag team wrestling over to SmackDown Live, especially with the New Day continuing to hold it down on Monday Night Raw.

Many assumed that their relatively quick call-up to the main roster would lead them to become the SmackDown tag team champions right off the bat, with the rest of the teams challenging them.

That plan was thrown out of the window earlier this week after they defeated The Usos in under 30 seconds, resulting in a surprising heel turn for the twins and now new plans are in place for the titles at WWE Backlash this Sunday.

According to CageSideSeats, The Usos are now the frontrunners to capture the gold. This means not only will they defeat The Hype Bros, but they'll also go on to defeat Rhyno and Heath Slater in the final, ending Slater’s hopes of earning a contract, for now at least.

While American Alpha were planned to win, the WWE decided to run the injury angle now because they didn’t want to give away the payoff too early. So the plan is to have them face a long and difficult road to the gold, making it feel like they’ve had to earn it and taking the fans on a journey with them.

The plan now is to have The Usos become the top tag team on SmackDown for a while, and they’ll do so as heels which can be brilliant for their careers. This will then follow up with face teams chasing them to build the division around The Usos.

Chad Gable and Jason Jordan are expected to return to television within a month, and their storyline will apparently see them chasing The Usos for injuring them, and stealing their chance at becoming champions.

This will be the big tag team feud on SmackDown, as there’s now sympathy for Gable from the fans, and it’ll help build American Alpha up as the uber-face tag team on the blue brand before the division is eventually built around them somewhere down the line.
