CM Punk's UFC debut lasted exactly 2:14 seconds as Mickey Gall put the former WWE champion out of his misery with a rear-naked choke to quickly extend his unbeaten record to 3-0.

After signing with the MMA promotion in 2014, many will see Punk's two-year journey to the octagon as an embarrassing failure, and the first round stoppage makes those claims all the more emphatic.

However, his former WWE friends have been nothing but supportive in the wake of his defeat.

Several former peers took to Twitter to support Punk and pay respect to the 37-year-old for getting into the octagon at all.

It's nice to see Punk isn't completely alienated from the WWE and, at the very least, its superstars.

Hopefully Vince McMahon and co. will resist taking a shot at Punk on commentary during their pay-per-view, Backlash, tonight.

From the get-go, Gall took Punk down and hammered him with brutal shots as the former WWE champion was mounted from the start.

Gall managed to apply the rear-naked choke after landing several shots on the back of Punk's head and was in total control for the entire fight. It's a shame that Punk's - real name Phil Brooks - debut had to end that way, but it was hardly a surprise to many.

It was, in essence, a mauling. However, Punk insisted after the bout that he will be back and intends to fight again. Incredibly, surely the only way is up?
