Gary Neville was always a big character on the pitch during his professional career, and, since retiring, the former England defender has proven himself to be a genuinely funny guy off it.

As a pundit with Sky Sports, the ex-Manchester United regularly trolls Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football and he is also never too far away from pushing publish on a hilarious tweet.

And Neville was back at it again on Friday after a simple but brilliant response to one of his followers this morning.

Attempting to promote Sky Sports' coverage of Friday night's Premier League clash between Chelsea and Liverpool, G-Nev sent out the following fairly harmless tweet.

As is often the case on social media, one of the first responses was a pretty bizarre message, this time from a user named @SuperbiaInPro who, for some unknown reason, decided to tell the former United full-back that his wife had left him.

Rather than handing out any marital advice or simply ignoring the strange response, Neville clearly did a bit of quick research before declaring what, in his eyes at least, was the obvious reason Matt's partner had made a swift exit...

Savage from Neville!

Say what you like about the 41-year-old, but he certainly knows how to wind up the blue half of Manchester.

He was notorious for antagonising opposition fans during his playing career and he clearly hasn't lost his touch in retirement.

Neville has done well to get a sly dig in on City in this of all weeks.

Only six days ago, his former side was being outplayed at Old Trafford en route to a 2-1 defeat against Pep Guardiola's team.

That result saw City end Mourinho's unbeaten start to his United career and continue their own 100 percent record in the Premier League.

With the Red Devils having lost to Feyenoord last night, and City winning 4-0 in the Champions League, it is the blue half of Manchester who are probably in better spirits heading into this weekend's fixtures.
