Cristiano Ronaldo’s excuse for missing Real Madrid v Espanyol has stunned Twitter

Football News

Cristiano Ronaldo has only just returned from injury but he won’t be featuring in Real Madrid’s next match against Espanyol on Sunday.

The Portuguese star scored six minutes into his return against Osasuna last weekend and followed that up with a magnificent free-kick against his former employers Sporting Lisbon in midweek.

But football fans can’t believe why he’s been ruled out of this weekend’s fixture at the RCDE Stadium.

"Cristiano will not travel with us. He has been feeling a sore throat, and he will stay at home," Zidane told a news conference, per ESPN. "We will take no risks, as always, and even less with Cristiano."

That’s right: Ronaldo isn’t playing against Espanyol because he has a sore throat.

Twitter reacts

Needless to say, the three-time Ballon d’Or winner’s excuse has caused quite a stir on social media.

Gareth Bale also set to miss the match

Gareth Bale is also set to miss the match after being subbed off with a hip injury against Sporting.

"We will have to see with Gareth,” Zidane added. "The players want to play, which is good, but with so many games to play, every three days, we cannot take risks with such an important player.

“I’m not saying tomorrow is not important, but he might get a bang in the same spot, and be out for 10 days, or more. I prefer for him to be 100 percent on Wednesday. Although I always speak first with the player."

Real Madrid remain top of La Liga despite Barcelona’s 5-1 win over Leganes earlier today.

However, can they beat Espanyol away from home without Ronaldo and Bale?
