Poor RAW ratings could see Seth Rollins become new WWE Universal Champion

Fans will have their opinions on whether Kevin Owens is the correct choice as the current Universal Champion or not, as the perception not too long ago suggested that he didn’t have an ideal look to be the top star in the company.

The brand extension acted as a blessing for him, along with the unfortunate injury sustained by Finn Balor.

Now, whether fans like it or not, Owens will be making the first defence of his title next week when he takes on Seth Rollins.

This match helps establish the champion as the biggest heel on the roster, with the challenger passing over the mantle and now becoming the top face on the Raw roster.

However, the biggest issue facing the red brand right now is that the ratings are at an all-time low.

Many could argue that the return of Monday Night Football in the US played an expected part in the small numbers this past week. Not only that, the live event this past week in Louisville, Kentucky also drew low numbers, with top sections looking empty.

The Inquisitr are reporting that Owens may not be the champion for much longer, though. First off, there are some people backstage that are reportedly unhappy with the manner in which Triple H helped crown a new champion, and that he didn't deserve the spot he was put in.

SmackDown Live’s numbers also weren't doing great until AJ Styles dethroned Dean Ambrose to become the new WWE Champion at Backlash, and last week’s viewership numbers were reported to be quite high.

This means a change of champion on Sunday could be the WWE’s way of increasing their ratings, even if Owens isn’t to blame for it. This probably wouldn’t do his chances of becoming the champion in the future any favours, but the WWE know that Rollins is a bigger draw than Owens, and you can’t argue that.

So if Owens does drop the championship on Sunday, we’ll know exactly why that decision was made. If not, then the WWE could be risking drawing in smaller number for many more months.
