Javier Mascherano is compared to Steven Gerrard for costly slip

Football fans can be a cruel bunch at the best of times.

Every time a player makes the slightest mistake or costly error on the pitch, they can expect to receive plenty of ridicule on social media - such is the world we live in.

And as well as Fernando Torres' cheeky nutmeg on Gerard Pique in the build up, Javier Mascherano's untimely slip-up against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night left plenty of non-Barca fans in stitches as Angel Correa stormed into the box to net the equalising goal.

In fact, some Liverpool fans might recall last night's horror show - which you can watch again further down the page - was ever so slightly reminiscent of a similar incident which occurred at Anfield just a few years ago.

Liverpool supporters may have purposefully blocked out the memory of Steven Gerrard losing his footing to gift Chelsea's Demba Ba the easiest of chances to effectively crush Brendan Rodgers' hopes of a Premier League title in 2014.

But they were reminded of it once again when Mascherano was left flat on his face by Correa's fast feet.

The Argentine was actually a midfield partner of Gerrard's between 2007-10 and despite not being at Anfield when the original gaffe occurred, some fans have jokingly claimed Mascherano's mistake was a touching tribute to the ex-England international.

Here are some of the best tweets that have compared the two major slip-ups:

Mascherano can take some solace knowing that - unlike Gerrard - an entire season didn't hinge on that one slip and he still has plenty of time to make up for it.

The 1-1 draw with Diego Simeone's side left Barcelona in third place in La Liga, three points behind leaders Real Madrid after five matches.

With Zinedine Zidane's men dropping points too, however, it will go down as a missed opportunity for Mascherano and co. to close the gap on their fierce rivals.
