Wayne Rooney trolled after Manchester United's first-half v Leicester

Manchester United's players went into Saturday's game with plenty of pressure attached to their shoulders. They had lost two Premier League matches on the spin and were in danger of dropping out of the title race before the clocks had even gone back.

Leicester City, last season's champions, would prove no pushovers in United's pursuit of three crucial points and Jose Mourinho was not helped by the fact that his club captain Wayne Rooney had been failing to perform.

The 30-year-old had become something of a scapegoat in Manchester United's worst moments and a number of fans and pundits believed the time had come for him to be dropped from the starting XI.

Speculation was rife that Mourinho was prepared to make such a decision and it was confirmed on Saturday morning that Rooney would indeed sit on the bench with Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata playing behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But how would the Manchester United team react to playing without their leader? Well, 45 minutes in and the answer is certainly obvious. Basically, they were brilliant.

The Red Devils simply blew away the reigning champions during the first half and went into the break four goals to the good. Goals from Chris Smalling, Mata, Rashford and Paul Pogba gave Manchester United a huge lead going into the break. Had the likes of Ibrahimovic and Rashford taken their chances, the lead could have been even bigger.

It was by far their best performance under Mourinho and, arguably, their most dominant performance in any of the last three campaigns.

Needless to say, fans are wondering if Rooney will ever get into the team again.
