Joey Barton reckons he was more talented than former Manchester United midfielder

Joey Barton’s new autobiography ‘No Nonsense’ has been serialised so much over the past couple of weeks that you could be forgiven if you felt buying a copy would be a complete waste of money.

However, it turns out there are still many interesting anecdotes and revelations inside the book that haven’t yet been published by the media - until now, anyway.

Among them is Barton’s admission that, in his opinion, he was more talented than a certain former Manchester United and England midfielder.

And before you worry that Barton may have been talking about Paul Scholes, don’t - he’s not that deluded.

The 34-year-old believes his talent was under-appreciated - and perhaps he has a point - but was he really better than Scholes’ former teammate?

Barton reckons he was better than Owen Hargreaves

Barton, in his book, says he “had more about him than Owen Hargreaves”, according to the Express.

How true is this?

Hargreaves was a top holding midfielder

Hargreaves may have been injury-prone, particularly towards the end of his career, but there’s no denying he was a top holding midfielder.

Sir Alex Ferguson wouldn’t have signed the Canada-born star from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2007 if he was a player with less ability than Barton.

Barton was a good Premier League player

With all due respect to him, Barton was a good Premier League player but nothing more than that.

Perhaps his career would have panned out differently had he handled certain situations better, but we’ll never know for sure.

Hargreaves has the better medals collection

Hargreaves, on the other hand, was a serial winner throughout his career and also transformed himself from scapegoat to hero in the eyes of the England fans thanks to his performances at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

As well as four Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and the Champions League with Bayern Munich, Hargreaves also won the Premier League title and the Champions League with United before injuries eventually ended his career.

Who was the better player at their respective peaks: Owen Hargreaves or Joey Barton? Have your say by leaving a comment below.
