The USMNT were victorious in their recent game against Honduras after the match went ahead despite freezing temperatures.Playing football in the winter when temperatures drop is never much fun, but the match between the USA and Honduras might just be one of the coldest games ever. The teams were forced to play the match despite temperatures in Minnesota reaching a ridiculous -19 degrees celsius. The USA did everything in their powers to help the players, fans and staff through the evening, providing 20,000 free hand-warmers, heated benches, additional hot food and drinks and even approved battery-operated warming devices. The players and referee were also allowed to wear as much cold-weather gear as necessary and many could be seen wearing snoods, face coverings and gloves.

Gregg Berhalter's team ran away 3-0 winners on the night, with goals from Weston McKennie, Walker Zimmerman and Chelsea's Christian Pulisic. But the main focus of the evening was on two Honduras players who had to be substituted due to Hypothermia, despite the precautions taken.

Honduras goalkeeper Luis 'Bobo' Lopez was the first player to leave the field to receive treatment as he was substituted at half-time, and was even treated with an IV according to reports.

Honduras forward Romell Quioto was also hooked after suffering from the freezing conditions, although it's believed his condition was less severe than the goalkeeper.

But Honduras' head coach Hernan Dario Gomez was not impressed that his team had been forced to play in the icy weather, he said before the game: "It's not normal.

"It's inconceivable that a power in every sense would bring you here to play a game and get a result. The game hasn't started, but I can't wait for it to end. Because it's not for enjoying, it's for suffering."

But the USMNT manager Berhalter defended the decision to continue with the game, saying: "What I would say is that we provided Honduras and their staff and the referees with warm weather gear.

"We provided them with heat gear, and were trying to make it a safe environment for them to play.

"When we go down to those countries, and it's 90 degrees in 90% dew point and it's unbearable humidity and guys are getting dehydrated and cramping up and getting heat exhaustion, that's the nature of our competition.

He explained: "When we schedule this game in this location, you have to go by average temperatures, daily average temperatures, and it was the best guess. We want to minimize travel.

"We knew we're gonna be playing in cold weather in two of the games and we figured to do it in the third game as well, instead of switching climates.

"The cold spell came through and it's something we can't control but all we can do once that happens is try to mitigate the risk by having warm weather gear and going out there and competing and we did that."

Even players from the USMNT spoke about the cold weather, with defender Zimmerman explaining that his opponents appeared unhappy even before the kickoff: "I don't think they wanted any part of that tonight.

"You could just tell coming out for warm-ups, their starting 11 not coming out right after the half."

USA Forward Timothy Weah joked on Instagram after the game: "I'm retiring next time we have to play in weather like this."
