Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor: Khabib Nurmagomedov's brutal opinion

Khabib Nurmagomedov has branded the 2017 crossover fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather “fake.”

The professional boxing fight was McGregor’s first and only experience inside the ropes. For Mayweather, however, it was his 50th professional fight and it was the one that earned him his perfect 50-0 record.

The fight went a lot longer than many people expected, with the UFC man holding his own, but eventually the fight was stopped in the 10th round. For both fighters, this was their last professional boxing fight to date.

Khabib stated that the crossover fight was a “historic event,” but did not think it warranted being a professional boxing fight.

“Not many people care about this fight,” the retired UFC fighter told the Full Send podcast

“It was a historical event because of an MMA champion vs boxing champion but many people don’t remember what happened inside the fight.

“It was just like sparring fight for me it was not real fight because this guy (McGregor) is not a real boxer. For me it was more like a fake fight.”

It is common knowledge that there is no love lost between Khabib and McGregor after they had a fierce rivalry when they went head-to-head inside the Octagon. In their fight back in 2018, the Russian defeated ‘The Notorious’ by submission in the fourth round.

After the fight, a mass brawl took place between both fighters’ teams, which was started when Khabib jumped over the cage and into the crowd. ‘The Eagle’ was fined $500,000 and banned from UFC for nine months.

In his interview, Khabib went on to compare the McGregor and Mayweather fight to his and McGregor’s.

“This is just my opinion. Maybe, maybe not… Then, what was between us, it was real. Everything what happened before the fight, inside the fight, after the fight.”

The two fighters never had a rematch despite McGregor pushing hard for it. Khabib, however, retired at the back end of 2020 after defeating Justin Gaethje.
