It's quite remarkable that Liverpool haven't won the FA Cup since the 2005/06 season.

The Reds have won the competition seven times in their history, but they've not even made the final since 2011/12 - where they were beaten 2-1 by arch rivals Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.

However, the last time Liverpool triumphed in the FA Cup was truly a epic experience for football fans.

The 2006 final remains one of the greatest in history, the Merseyside club eventually beating West Ham United in a penalty shootout after a hugely entertaining 3-3 draw after normal and extra time.

It was a match in which Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was simply unplayable and his performance is still waxed lyrical about in the present day.

The current Aston Villa manager spectacularly assisted Djibril Cisse's goal that dragged the Reds back into the game after West Ham raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to Dean Ashton and an own-goal from Jamie Carragher.

In the second period, Gerrard levelled the scores at 2-2 with a sumptuous half-volley, but he had to watch on as his team fell behind once again thanks to a fluke goal by Paul Konchesky.

Gerrard had another moment of magic up his sleeve, though. In the first minute of stoppage-time, the midfield icon scored perhaps the greatest goal in any FA Cup final during the 21st century thus far.

From all of 35 yards out, the former England international whacked a bouncing ball ridiculously hard and it flew into the bottom corner like a tracer bullet.

To cap off a truly world-class display, Gerrard converted from 12 yards in the shootout after Sami Hyypia's miss to put Liverpool in the driving seat - and they eventually secured victory when Pepe Reina saved Anton Ferdinand's effort.

Yeah, Gerrard was pretty good in the 2006 final and there was so much more to his performance than just goal contributions, as you'll see for yourself in the magnificent viral video below.

There aren't enough adjectives in the English language to do that display justice. A masterclass if ever there was one.

Rafa Benitez's Liverpool weren't quite a 'one-man team' in the 2000s when Gerrard was in his pomp, but they weren't far off to be honest.

Gerrard's 2006 heroics came just a year after he virtually single-handedly won the Champions League final versus AC Milan in Istanbul.

What a footballer he was.
