Senegal are 2022 Africa Cup of Nations champions after beating Egypt on penalties in the final on Sunday evening.

Senegal had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the game after just a few minutes.

Saliou Ciss burst into the box after a marauding run down the left-hand side.

He won a penalty for his side when he was sent to the turf by Mohamed Abdelmonem’s rash challenge.

Sadio Mane, one of the best players in the tournament, stepped up to give his side the lead.

He powered his effort at goal but Egypt stopper Gabaski pulled off a wonderful save to ensure parity remained.

Both sides had chances for the remainder of the game but neither side could break the deadlock.

Gabaski in particular was outstanding, denying Senegal time after time.

The two teams could not be separated and so, after it was still level after extra-time, the game had to be decided with penalties.

After both Mohamed Abdelmonem and Mohanad Lasheen were unsuccessful with their efforts, Mane was given the chance to get redemption and win the tournament for his side.

And Mane was up to the task as he smashed home the winning penalty for Senegall. View the winning moment below...

What an emphatic penalty. Mane saw his penalty saved in normal time but he was determined not to be denied again.

He lashed the ball into the corner of the net as he gave Gabaski absolutely no chance.

There were scenes of jubilation after Mane scored his penalty as Senegal celebrated becoming African champions for the first time.

After celebrating with his teammates, Mane then had the class to seek out his Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah, who was distraught, and comfort him.

Mane was awarded the player of the tournament. As well as netting the winning penalty, he also scored three times for Senegal in their triumphant campaign.
