Journalist Dean Jones cannot see Tottenham getting involved in a fight with Newcastle United to sign Lille defender Sven Botman in the summer.

The 22-year-old was a target for the latter last month but now also appears to be on the radar of the former.

What is the latest news involving Botman?

According to The Telegraph, Botman is one defender Tottenham are eyeing ahead of the summer transfer window.

After bringing in Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus to strengthen Spurs' attack and midfield, the same report states that Antonio Conte will now look to improve his defence, with Botman a target for the Italian.

Also per The Telegraph, the Dutch youngster was subject of heavy interest from Newcastle in the transfer window that has just passed, but Lille were unwilling to sell for less than £46m, making a deal extremely difficult.

Given how eager they were to sign him, you would expect Newcastle to try again in the summer, though a move seems extremely unlikely if the club find themselves playing in the Championship next season.

What has Jones said about Botman to Tottenham?

Jones does not think Tottenham are ready to get into a fight with Newcastle and their new-found wealth over Botman.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT on Spurs' reported interest, the transfer insider said: "That's the big problem that someone like Tottenham are going to have.

"Like, are they really going to get involved in a financial tussle with Newcastle to sign Sven Botman when there probably is better value to be had elsewhere? I doubt it. So if it comes down to a head-to-head, I don't think they'll get involved in it."

Should Tottenham get involved in the battle for Botman?

While you can understand why Tottenham would be reluctant to challenge Newcastle, who are now the richest club in the world, for Botman's signature, the Dutchman has the potential to be a very good signing for Spurs.

Botman is a central defender with a lot of potential, impressing in Lille's last Ligue 1 win, a 3-1 victory over Lorient.

That day, the Netherlands U21 international won three aerial duels, the most in the game, and made two tackles, which was only bettered by Vincent Le Goff. It helped him to earn a WhoScored rating of 7.2 and was an example of what he could bring to either Tottenham or Newcastle.

Ultimately, if Conte wants to sign a new centre-half, then Botman is exactly the kind of player Tottenham should at least be looking at.
