Wantaway West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is ‘definitely’ on Tottenham Hotspur’s list of transfer targets, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

Johnstone has entered the final five months of his contract at the Hawthorns and has been linked with several Premier League clubs after showing no signs of penning a new deal.

What is the latest news involving Johnstone?

The 28-year-old rose to prominence last season despite West Brom’s relegation from the top-flight, keeping six clean sheets in his 37 appearances.

His outstanding displays for the Baggies earned Johnstone a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s senior England squad for the first time back in March 2021, but he had to wait another few months before being awarded the first of his three caps.

However, despite catching the eye for both club and country last term, the 6 foot 4 shot-stopper stayed with West Brom upon their immediate return to the Championship.

Johnstone did outline his desire to be ‘back playing in the Premier League’ in a recent interview, though, opening the door to a potential move.

And according to HampshireLive, Tottenham, Southampton and West Ham United are amongst the keepers’ potential suitors who are ready to offer him a contract.

It seemed as though a January switch was on the cards after Johnstone was left out of the last four matchday squads by ex-manager Valerien Ismael, yet a formal offer was never made.

What has Crook said about Johnstone?

Crook believes Spurs could use Johnstone’s situation to their advantage in their efforts to secure his services, although the journalist is unsure he’ll want to play second fiddle to Hugo Lloris.

He told GiveMeSport: “I did a video for talkSPORT suggesting Tottenham could try and use that situation to their advantage because he's definitely on their list.

“I think the problem with that is that I think if he was to go, he would want guaranteed first-team football. Obviously, Lloris has just extended his contract, so he's not going to dislodge him immediately.”

Would Tottenham be a good move for Johnstone?

Tottenham captain and first-choice goalkeeper Lloris signed a new two-year deal last month, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2024.

The 35-year-old was set to become a free agent following the conclusion of the current campaign but has now extended his stay to beyond a decade with the Lilywhites.

Johnstone is likely to find it difficult to dislodge the France international, should he choose to join Spurs, and therefore, it may be wise for him to sign for a side where he will be the main man.
