Brighton right-back Tariq Lamptey would be an excellent signing for Manchester United, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

After spending over nine months on the sidelines with a serious hamstring injury, Lamptey returned to action earlier this season, and he has performed like he has never been away.

What's the latest transfer news involving Lamptey?

Lamptey joined Brighton from Chelsea back in January 2020, and has emerged as a fine prospect down the right flank for Graham Potter’s men.

The diminutive 21-year-old has delivered consistently strong performances over the last two years when he has been fit, and this has caught the eye of one of England’s biggest clubs.

It has been reported that United have taken an interest in Lamptey, although they would have to splash the cash to sign him as Brighton are believed to value him at around the £40m mark.

What has Crook said about Lamptey?

Crook rates Lamptey highly, and thinks that the former Chelsea man could be just the player to strengthen the right side of United’s defence.

When asked whether it would be a positive move for United to look to sign Lamptey, Crook told GIVEMESPORT: “He’d be a brilliant addition.”

Would Lamptey be an upgrade on United's current right-back options?

If Lamptey did move to Old Trafford, he would likely be battling Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot for the right-back spot in the side.

Wan-Bissaka previously flourished at Crystal Palace, but has struggled at times at United, which has seen him drop out of the team recently, and this could be a warning to Lamptey that making the jump from a mid-table club to the 13-time Premier League champions is far from easy.

Meanwhile, Dalot has been in and out of the side since he joined in 2018, and he was even sent out on loan last season to AC Milan.

This highlights how the right-back position has been a problem area for United for a while, with neither Wan-Bissaka or Dalot making the role their own.

Lamptey is still young, and he would be under a lot of pressure to deliver at United, but he has done extremely well at Brighton either side of his injury setback, and if he could replicate that form for the Red Devils, he could be the answer to the club’s right-back issues.
