Tottenham transfer news: £15m RWB target 'easier to get than Lamptey', bids already tabled

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte

Tottenham will find it easier to sign Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence than Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey, says transfer insider Pete O’Rourke.

The north London club have been linked with both defenders, but O’Rourke thinks they have a better chance landing the former.

What is the latest news involving Spence and Lamptey?

According to ESPN‘s James Olley, Tottenham had two bids for Spence rejected last month as Antonio Conte looked to bring in a new right-back.

The 21-year-old, who Middlesbrough are thought to value at £15m, is currently at Nottingham Forest on loan and has impressed there, recently earning a 7.31 match rating on WhoScored following his side’s 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

As well as Spence, Tottenham are also thought to be interested in Lamptey, with the Evening Standard claiming that they could make a move for him in the summer.

Lamptey missed most of last season and the beginning of this campaign due to a hamstring injury, but the English youngster is fit again and has seemingly caught the attention of Conte.

What has O’Rourke said about Spence and Lamptey?

O’Rourke has told GIVEMESPORT that Tottenham will find it easier to sign Spence than Lamptey when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

Speaking to GMS about Spurs’ interest in the two young full-backs, the football journalist said: “Djed Spence might be easier to get than Lamptey. Brighton will be looking for a big price tag for his signature I think, while Middlesbrough would be more willing to let Djed Spence go.”

Do Tottenham need Spence or Lamptey?

Conte will certainly think so. It was widely reported last month that the Italian was keen on signing Adama Traore to strengthen his side in the right wing-back position.

However, with the Wolves winger going on to join Barcelona on loan instead, it means the above was an area Conte was unable to address.

Do you know this obscure player Tottenham signed in the January transfer window?

Spurs do have Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty for that position, signing the former from Traore’s current club last summer for £25.8m, but Conte still seems intent on strengthening there.

Lamptey looks like a really good option, with the former Chelsea man easily one of the best full-backs going forward in the country.

“It’s not quite so easy to get a right-back to attack the backline like he does,” Brighton manager Graham Potter was quoted as saying by FourFourTwo back in December. “He’s still growing and growing and developing as a player and we’re delighted with him.”

Considering that, as O’Rourke has said, Spurs will probably find it easier to sign Spence, with a player of Lamptey’s ability unlikely to come cheap.
