Journalist Pete O'Rourke wouldn't be surprised to see West Brom sign Jack Wilshere.

The 30-year-old is a free agent following his release from Bournemouth at the end of last season but could be in line for a return to Championship football.

What's the latest news involving Wilshere?

It's been a frustrating time since the midfielder wasn't offered a new contract by the Cherries. In fact, he's facing the prospect of not playing a single minute in a season for the first time since he missed the entire 2011-2012 campaign through injury.

But GiveMeSport's Dean Jones recently revealed that Wilshere could make a return to football, with West Brom eyeing up a move for the free agent, who's able to sign out of a transfer window because he's without a club.

Wilshere hasn't played a single first-team appearance since coming off the bench in Bournemouth's play-off game with Brentford back in May but has been training with Arsenal to maintain his fitness levels.

Therefore, with Steve Bruce looking to stamp his authority on his West Brom side, who are currently ninth in the Championship table following three defeats on the bounce, O'Rourke reckons that the ex-Gunners midfielder could become an option for the newly-appointed Baggies boss.

What did O'Rourke say about Wilshere?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "It wouldn't be a total surprise [to see West Brom sign Jack Wilshere]. I'm sure Steve Bruce will be looking to freshen things up at West Brom, obviously Wilshere is a free agent, so West Brom would be able to bring him in."

Would Wilshere be a good signing?

Wilshere has hardly played in the last three-and-a-half years, but after all, this is a player that was once compared to Paul Gascoigne and has been capped 34 times by England.

But his ability has rarely been questioned, it's his fitness problems that have stopped him from having the career that he once threatened. But Wilshere managed to remain fit while on a short-term deal with Bournemouth last season, scoring twice and laying on one assist in 18 games in all competitions and wouldn't miss a single game through injury.

Therefore, with Bruce in desperate need of a creative spark in midfield, with his West Brom side scoring only four goals in eight games, they could do a lot worse than taking a punt on Wilshere.

After all, they won't be paying a transfer fee and could even offer him a pay as you play contract.
