It's hard keeping track of every single player to represent a football club over the course of many years.

Even the most avid fan will tend to forget a fair few names and that certainly applies to the very biggest teams on the planet as well.

Manchester United are a prime example of that. In the 21st century alone, a high number of footballers have donned the famous red shirt in a professional setting a few times before jetting off elsewhere.

So, we've decided to scour through the archives and found 11 players to have represented the Red Devils since the turn of the millenium that most people will have completely forgotten about.

To make things a little tougher for ourselves, those who played for United's youth sides only were not considered for selection. Unlucky, Danny Drinkwater...

Wilfried Zaha

Zaha is now one of the Premier League's most-feared attackers at Crystal Palace, but his dismal two-year spell at United - which also included three loan moves, two of them to Palace - is rarely talked about these days. Zaha made just four senior appearances at Old Trafford, failing to score or assist a goal.

Victor Valdes

A bona fide Barcelona legend that couldn't get a game at United - well, apart from two. Valdes' 12 month stay with the Red Devils was anything but memorable and he joined Middlesbrough in 2016, before retiring from the sport a year later.

Phil Bardsley

That's right, the man who infamously knocked Wayne Rooney out in his kitchen actually played for the same team. Bardsley was on United's books for five years between 2003 and 2008, but was restricted to just 18 appearances in that time, so he joined Sunderland on a permanent basis. Bardsley is still in the Premier League with Burnley.

Josh King

Remember King lighting up the Premier League in a United shirt? Of course you don't, because he played just two games between 2009 and 2013. After multiple loan moves, the Norwegian forward eventually joined Blackburn and he's gone on to represent Everton, Bournemouth and current team Watford in the English top-flight.

Giuseppe Rossi

Before he was smashing in goals for fun in La Liga with Villarreal between 2007 and 2013, Rossi was trying to make it at United after joining the club's youth setup from Parma. It didn't work out for him, though, the Italian striker playing only 14 games for the Red Devils. Rossi is now in Serie B with SPAL.

Danny Simpson

One of Leicester's 2015/16 title-winning heroes began his career at United. Simpson spent four years in the club's first-team, but played just eight times as he was always out on loan. The right-back joined Newcastle in the summer of 2010 after realising game time was going to be incredibly hard to come by at Old Trafford. He's now at Bristol City.

Ben Foster

Another member of the current Watford squad, along with King, who had a forgotten stint with United in the 21st century. Foster joined the club from Stoke in 2005 and went on to make only 23 appearances in total before signing for Birmingham on a permanent basis in 2010.

Robbie Brady

The Bournemouth winger graduated from United's youth system in 2010, however, he was rewarded for that success with one solitary game in the first-team. Brady secured a move to Hull in 2013 and can now be found occupying the flanks at Bournemouth.

Mame Biram Diouf

The same Diouf that played for Blackburn and Stoke City? You betcha. United decided to bring in the Senegal international from Molde in 2009 and he didn't really make the grade at Old Trafford, scoring just once in nine appearances. He's out in Turkey with Hatayspor these days, where goals haven't been as hard to come by.

Ryan Shawcross

The Stoke icon, who recently announced his retirement, started his professional journey at United. Shawcross graduated to the first-team in 2006, but like Brady, he played just a single game. The no-nonsense centre-back joined Stoke in 2008, before a very short and very uneventful spell with David Beckham's Inter Miami in 2021.

Ritchie De Laet

De Laet played alongside Shawcross at Stoke for a year and was then signed by United in 2009. He played six games in total for the Red Devils, only two more appearances than he had loan spells while at the club. The Belgian is now with Royal Antwerp after something of a journeyman career following his permanent United exit in 2012.
