Wilfried Zaha penalty: Bersant Celina's for Swansea v West Brom in 2019 was much worse

Wilfried Zaha took one of the worst penalties in Premier League history on Wednesday evening.

The tricky Ivorian winger scored a screamer in the 60th minute for Crystal Palace against Norwich.

Moments later, he was given the chance to double his tally from the spot.

Zaha looked confident as he strode to the ball.

But he appeared to lose his footing and consequently dragged his effort well wide of Norwich’s goal. Watch his penalty below…

It was an awful penalty and one of the worst we’ve seen in in recent times.

It was nowhere near as bad as Bersant Celina’s for Swansea vs West Brom a few years back, though.

On March 13, 2019, Swansea travelled to West Brom for their Championship clash.

West Brom were leading 1-0 when Swansea were given a penalty in the 40th minute.

Celina stepped up, but he got his spot-kick horribly wrong.

The Kosovan, like Zaha, lost his footing as he went to take his kick. The ball ended up travelling a yard or so before being cleared by a West Brom player. View the moment below…

The commentator on Sky Sports was in disbelief, saying: “Oh my goodness. I can’t believe my eyes. He better have repeat fees on that because it is going to be replayed over and over again.”

While his co-commentator said: “I have never seen anything like that in a match before.”

A few years on and it’s still one of the spectacular penalty misses in recent times.

To make matters even worse for Celina, Chris Brunt ran up to him and gave him a few choice words before laughing in his face.

West Brom then went on to win the game 3-0.

Zaha may be feeling bad about his penalty this morning. But Celina’s spot-kick is a reminder that it could have been much, much worse.
