Wayne Rooney's storied career saw another bizarre chapter added to it on Sunday afternoon after a mid-game incident with a young fan.

The Manchester United legend, now manager of Championship side, Derby County, has been wrestling with the herculean task of rescuing the club in its darkest hour.

Having been hit with numerous points penalties, taking the total tally of points shaved off to 21, the Rams are, somehow, still in with a chance of survival.

Rooney has had a lot to do with that, showing some real grit and determination in his bid to never give in haul his side over the line.

It's that sort of sheer-bloody-mindedness that made him a superstar at United and something that has deeply endeared him to the faithful on the terraces at Pride Park.

However, even he was at a bit of a loss for what to do when a young fan approached him in the technical area, mid-game, seeking a unique selfie.

With Derby slumping towards another crucial loss, the shocked commentators interrupted the normally scheduled programming as they caught a glimpse of what was happening on the sidelines.

The man on the microphone was simply astonished by what he was witnessing, and at the ease with which the young lad was able to simply canter off back down the touchline unchecked.

You can see the remarkable footage in the clip below:

Derby would go on to lose the clash 4-1 after Duncan Watmore added another in the dying minutes to compound Rooney's misery.

While the young lad scored himself a truly unique memento, you can be certain that Rooney won't be looking like the happiest fellow when the picture itself does emerge online.

Derby will next welcome fellow relegation strugglers Peterborough for a crucial clash next week.

With every single point like absolutely gold-dust at the moment, a win over the Posh could prove to be quite the tonic for Rooney and his men.
