Fraser Forster is expected to leave Southampton in the summer but there is still a possibility that he could be offered a new contract if he is willing to take a pay cut, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

Forster looked all but certain to leave Saints at the end of the season, but there now appears to be a possibility that he could remain with his current employers.

What's the latest news involving Forster?

Forster's agreement with Southampton - worth £70,000-per-week - is set to expire in the summer, leading to doubts over his immediate future.

The goalkeeper, who is Saints' second-highest earner, joined the club for a fee in the region of £10million from Scottish Premiership giants Celtic in 2014 and has gone on to make 149 appearances for his current employers.

With Alex McCarthy also out of contract in the coming months, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed earlier in the season that his intention was to allow one of his goalkeepers to depart at the season's climax but tie the other down to a new deal.

Saints were reportedly close to agreeing fresh terms with McCarthy in November, with that heightening the prospect of Forster heading through the St Mary's exit door.

But a new McCarthy contract has failed to come to fruition and, as a result, there are still question marks over Southampton's goalkeeping department going forward.

What has Tom Barclay said about Forster?

Barclay has been certain that this will be Forster's final season on the books of Southampton, but he now has doubts.

The journalist has floated the idea that the 33-year-old, who has won six international caps for England, could see an interesting proposition come his way before the expiry of his current deal but still expects the custodian to depart.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: "As I've consistently said, Fraser Forster will probably leave when his contract's up, albeit he's playing at the moment and doing well.

"If they can get him on reduced terms, who knows, but that's what I imagine will happen."

Would Forster be likely to accept reduced terms?

It appears Southampton failed with a similar proposition less than 12 months ago as it emerged last summer that Forster had rejected fresh terms which would involve him taking a 40 per cent wage cut.

However, he may be more inclined to hold negotiations if he is given first-team assurances by Hasenhuttl.

In the absence of McCarthy, Forster has played seven of Saints' last eight Premier League fixtures and played his part in impressive wins over the likes of West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, along with stalemates against both Manchester clubs.

The 6 ft 7 custodian may see his extended run in the starting line-up as an opportunity to show his worth and put himself in the shop window or, alternatively, give himself ammunition when it comes to pleading his case for not being deserving of a pay decrease.
