Chelsea are going to have to really push the boat out if they are to keep hold of Antonio Rudiger, says journalist Dean Jones.

The 28-year-old is out of contract in the summer, and Jones has suggested that there is not too much optimism coming from his side right now over a new deal.

What is the latest news involving Rudiger?

Rudiger recently spoke to The Athletic about his future, telling them that he feels great at Chelsea but staying at the club is not his decision alone to make.

"I feel great here, I have always said it. I think the way I play you can see that I’m happy here. But there are also other people who have to make decisions," the German defender said.

According to the same outlet, the Club World Cup winners are prioritising tying Rudiger down to a new deal over Andreas Christensen, who is also set to be a free agent in the summer.

He has played a massive role in Chelsea's success under Thomas Tuchel, helping them to claim the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup after starting in all three finals.

What has Jones said about Rudiger's contract situation?

In line with Rudiger's recent comments, Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that Chelsea need to seriously act if they want their Germany international to remain at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to GMS, the football insider said: "I know that there's been optimism in the Chelsea social media community that this situation is improving. From his end of things, I don't get that feeling particularly. I think Chelsea are going to have to really push the boat out to make him happy here."

Can Chelsea afford to lose Rudiger?

No. As already mentioned, he has played a huge part in Chelsea's three recent trophy triumphs.

It is also important to note that Rudiger, despite being right footed, has been playing on the left side of Tuchel's back three. That ability to play in that area of the pitch alone makes him such a good asset to have.

Ultimately, the Chelsea colossus, who only cost £29m when he joined from AS Roma back in 2017, is going to be practically impossible to replace, making him someone the Blues cannot afford to lose this summer.

It does not matter if his wage demands are high because if they do end up partying ways, Chelsea are probably going to have to spend a fortune anyway to bring in a replacement of his calibre.
