Manchester United should not appoint Southampton chief Ralph Hasenhuttl as their new manager in the summer, according to Carlton Palmer.

Ralf Rangnick is in interim charge of the Red Devils until the end of the campaign but, with there being question marks over who will be in the Old Trafford dugout for the long-term, it has led to plenty of speculation over who could be at the helm on the opening day of next season.

What's the latest news involving Hasenhuttl?

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has suggested Hasenhuttl would be a 'good fit' as the Red Devils continue their search for a boss to replace Rangnick.

Scholes' BT Sport colleague Glenn Hoddle also claimed giving the Austrian the top job 'makes sense' ahead of a new era at Old Trafford.

It comes after Hasenhuttl told German outlet Kicker, via The Athletic, that he will consider retiring from management when his current Southampton contract expires.

In the interview, Hasenhuttl admitted to having no intention of being in the dugout beyond the age of 57.

Hasenhuttl has entered the final two-and-a-half years of his Saints deal, with the agreement set to expire in the summer of 2024.

What has Carlton Palmer said about Hasenhuttl?

Palmer believes Hasenhuttl should be commended for how he has performed at the Southampton helm.

However, the former Saints midfielder feels being handed the Manchester United job would be a step too far.

Palmer exclusively told GIVEMESPORT: "I think he's done a good job. They finished 15th in the league last year and they're currently 10th in the league this season.

"He's not been spectacular, but he's done a good job. To be linked with Manchester United because they've had a recent good run of form, I think this is where you have the sliding scales in the world we live in. You do well now and we go overboard."

Why would appointing Hasenhuttl make sense?

Although Rangnick is set to leave the Manchester United dugout at the end of the season, part of the agreement which took him to Old Trafford included him moving into a two-year consultancy role in the summer.

Rangnick and Hasenhuttl previously worked together at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, with the latter being in the hot seat while the current Red Devils interim manager was the club's sporting director.

After moving into his new behind-the-scenes role, Rangnick will play a key role in Manchester United decision-making and he has already shown his admiration for Hasenhuttl by describing him as an 'excellent coach'.
