Cristiano Ronaldo ended his 2022 goal drought in style on Tuesday evening at Old Trafford.

Prior to Manchester United's crucial Premier League match against Brighton, the 37-year-old had not found the back of the net in any competition since the turn of the year.

He also missed a penalty in the shock FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough, but Ronaldo finally returned to his brilliant best on Tuesday night after a very difficult first half for his team.

Right at the start of the second period, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner latched onto a pass near the penalty box, produced a sublime dummy to fool a defender and then fired the ball into the corner of Robert Sanchez's net with his trusty right peg to put United 1-0 up.

Video: Ronaldo's goal vs Brighton

It's taken him a while, but Ronaldo's 2022 has begun - and the goal was pretty darn special as well. Ironically, it came just a matter of minutes after Lionel Messi's penalty miss for Paris Saint-Germain versus his former club Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Very soon after Ronaldo's sumptuous strike that sent the Old Trafford faithful wild, Brighton were reduced to 10 men when Lewis Dunk was shown a red card for pulling down Anthony Elanga.

The referee initially gave a yellow card, but upgraded the punishment after consulting the VAR monitor.

United - Ronaldo in particular - had huge chances to kill the game as a contest following Dunk's dismissal from the field of play, but the team had to wait until the final minute of stoppage-time to make it 2-0 and secure all three points.

Bruno Fernandes was the man who grabbed the Red Devils' second goal, the midfielder finishing off a sweeping counterattack after a smartly taken free-kick by Paul Pogba.

Ralf Rangnick's side are now up to fourth in the Premier League table, two points ahead of West Ham United having played the same number of games.

The win over Brighton really could prove to be season-changing for United...
