Transfer insider Dean Jones would be “surprised” if Tottenham are planning to sell midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer.

The 52-cap Denmark international has been linked with a surprise move away from North London despite Jones describing him as an “integral” part of Antonio Conte’s side.

What’s the latest news involving Hojbjerg?

Despite Hojbjerg being an almost guaranteed starter ever since he arrived from Southampton in the summer of 2020, he’s being touted with a move to Roma and a reunion with Jose Mourinho, who brought him to Tottenham.

According to a report by Italian outlet, Corriere della Sera (via Sport Witness), the Roma manager is keeping tabs on Hojbjerg ahead of the summer transfer window.

Do you know this obscure player Tottenham signed in the January transfer window?

The 26-year-old was dropped by Conte for the visit of Wolves on Sunday, but he had previously started every Premier League game that he had been available for since signing for Tottenham.

Following the 2-0 defeat to Bruno Lage’s men, there’s every chance that Hojbjerg could be recalled for the trip to Manchester City on Saturday, especially given that he’s been Spurs’ third-best player this season, according to WhoScored, behind only Lucas Moura and Heung Min Son.

What did Jones say about Hojbjerg?

When asked about links with a move away from the club, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Hojbjerg is such an integral part of that Tottenham team, so it would be very surprising if they were looking to step away from him.”

Should Tottenham keep Hojbjerg?

While centre midfielder remains a problematic position for Conte, he has other issues to deal with before even considering selling someone like Hojbjerg. His form has dipped this season, although he has still chipped in with some impressive statistics.

To go with his two goals and one assist, Hojbjerg has the second-best pass success rate (88.5%) in the Spurs squad, while he averages 1.3 clearances per game, 1.5 interceptions, 2.1 tackles and makes almost 70 completed passes every 90 minutes.

Hojbjerg is far from the finished article, nor is he as effective as someone like Mousa Dembele in the heart of midfield.

But the arrival of Rodrigo Bentancur should allow the Dane to focus more on winning the ball back and then keeping it simple, leaving the Uruguayan to make a difference at the top end of the pitch.
