Journalist Dean Jones believes the possibility of signing Harry Kane would be discussed if Mauricio Pochettino was interviewed to become Manchester United’s next manager.

The Red Devils are expected to appoint a new permanent boss in the summer when current interim manager Ralf Rangnick moves to a consultancy role within the club’s hierarchy.

What is the latest news involving Man Utd?

Pochettino has long been linked with the job at Old Trafford following five successful years at Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

According to ESPN, the 49-year-old tactician was the ‘leading candidate’ to replace Jose Mourinho back in 2018 prior to Solskjaer being appointed on a full-time basis after impressing during an initial spell as interim boss.

The same outlet also claim that Pochettino was the favourite to then succeed the Norwegian after he was also dismissed earlier this season.

However, Pochettino ended up staying at current club Paris Saint-Germain, yet the high-pressure nature of the job in the French capital means he’s unlikely to remain there for long.

As a result, speculation over the South American’s future has continued to mount, with the Manchester Evening News claiming there is a ‘confidence’ within United that they can lure him to the club.

And Jones reckons Pochettino is likely to be quizzed over the potential signing of Kane should he finally take his place in the Red Devils hot seat.

What has Jones said about Pochettino?

Kane established himself as one of football’s leading marksmen under the tutelage of Pochettino, bagging 169 goals and providing 30 assists in 242 appearances throughout their time together at Spurs.

The England international attempted to force an exit from his boyhood club last summer, though, and Jones thinks United could try and capitalise on his situation.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think one that would even be probably talked about when they’re discussing the job with Pochettino would be, ‘What would be the chance of you bringing Harry Kane with you?’”

Could United sign Pochettino and Kane?

Pochettino recently declared that he is still '200%' focused on his job at PSG amid continued interest from United in him becoming their next permanent manager.

But things change quickly in football and his arrival at the Theatre of Dreams over the summer would hardly be a shock.

What would be rather more surprising, though, is if Kane followed his former mentor to the red half of Manchester.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is renowned for being a tough negotiator, and even though Rangnick has openly stated how United need a younger striker, it’s difficult to imagine them paying Kane’s price tag.
