Journalist 'would be surprised' if Aston Villa sign Arturo Vidal in the summer

Transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed he ‘would be surprised’ if Aston Villa make a move for Inter midfielder Arturo Vidal when the transfer market re-opens.

Vidal has entered the final five months of his current contract at San Siro and has been linked with a move to several clubs across the continent in recent weeks as a result.

What is the latest news involving Vidal?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, there are four clubs who are closely monitoring the 34-year-old’s situation as they contemplate making an offer for his services.

The report states that Villa are joined by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur as well as Marseille and Galatasaray in the queue for Vidal’s signature.

Throughout his career, the 131-cap Chile international has proven to a success at every club he has turned out for, winning a plethora of silverware as a result.

After turning out for Juventus, Bayern Munich and Barcelona prior to his move to Inter, Vidal has claimed five Serie A titles, three Bundesliga crowns, one La Liga, one German Cup and one Copa del Rey.

He also fired his nation to consecutive Copa America titles but has struggled for game time this season, starting just one league game under the tutelage of Simone Inzaghi.

What has Jones said about Vidal?

Villa currently have one of the youngest squads in the Premier League, with Transfermarkt revealing Steven Gerrard’s charges have an average age of 25.5 this season.

And although Jones stated how he could ‘understand’ why the Midlands outfit may target the £135,000-per-week Vidal for his ‘experience’, his arrival at Villa Park would still come as a shock to the journalist.

He told GiveMeSport: “I would be surprised if Villa specifically went for Vidal, but I understand in terms of the profile and the experience why they would want somebody like Vidal.”

Would Villa move for Vidal?

Upon their promotion back to the top-flight in 2019, Villa chief Christian Purslow stated that the club’s goal would be to build ‘a young exciting team’ that ‘establishes itself back in the Premier League’.

After avoiding relegation in their maiden campaign and building on that foundation last term, Villa have altered their transfer strategy somewhat in the current campaign, though.

Who was Martin O’Neill’s record signing during his time at Villa?

The likes of Ashley Young, Robin Olsen Danny Ings and Philippe Coutinho have all been signed, who are at least 29 years old.

Whether Gerrard would sanction the acquisition of Vidal remains to be seen, but it will likely depend on which direction the English tactician wants to take the club’s recruitment plan in next.
