Lionel Messi would never have imagined that he would playing for Paris Saint-Germain a year ago.
While the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner made it pretty clear that he wanted to leave Barcelona in the summer of 2020, Messi made no secret of the fact that he had completed a U-turn just 12 months on.
As such, the irony to the heartbreaking situation at Camp Nou last year was that Messi departed when he wanted to stay having initially remained when he wanted to leave.
Messi adjusting to life at PSG
It’s a crazy scenario that many football fans are still getting their heads around with the sight of Messi decked out in PSG colours feeling a little strange on the back of 17 seasons with the Blaugrana.
Nevertheless, Messi is a model professional and has kept his head down with tireless effort since moving to the Parc des Princes, looking to move past his heartbreaking exit from Barcelona.
It’s not been all sunshine and rainbows for Messi in the French capital, that much is true, but the 34-year-old has nevertheless yielded tallies of seven goals and seven assists that aren’t to be sniffed at.
And although neither of those totals were added to during the Champions League clash with Real Madrid in mid-week, Messi enjoyed a historic night with the French giants nonetheless.
PSG 1-0 Real Madrid
It’s been well-publicised that Messi wasn’t at his best during the 1-0 triumph in Paris with the Argentine star seeing his chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot thwarted by Thibaut Courtois.
However, Messi’s quiet performance, which was slapped with a 3/10 rating by L’Equipe, still helped PSG to take one step closer to the Champions League quarter-finals as Kylian Mbappe eventually notched a winner.
And that naturally sparked scenes of delirium around the Parc des Princes with the French giants hungry to see their team lift ‘Big Ears’ for the very first time.
But amongst all the post-match celebrations that reverberated around PSG’s 47,000-capacity home, the behaviour and demeanour of Messi was picked up on to the point that it’s formed the basis for a viral video.
Worrying comparison video of Messi
Footage showing Messi amongst his PSG teammates celebrating the victory over Real with the fans didn’t exactly cut him as the happiest figure.
Rubbing his chin with a grimace as Neymar and Marquinhos looked ecstatic, the telling clip has been cut alongside footage of Messi celebrating a Champions League win for Barcelona in far more animated style.
It really does make for a stark contrast with the caption going as far as opining that ‘Messi left his heart in Barcelona’, so be sure to check out the worrying comparison down below:

Something just doesn’t quite look right there, does it?
Messi’s reaction to Mbappe’s goal
There are always ways in which you can twist edits and comparisons to suit a certain agenda, but we can’t escape the fact that Messi looks strangely sullen for a man whose just won a massive Champions League game.
And it wasn’t an isolated incident either with footage of the exact moment that Mbappe found the net with his injury-time winner remarkably showing that Messi barely celebrated in the immediate aftermath.
As the jubilant PSG players rushed into the corner to congratulate Mbappe in amongst a bouncing Parc des Princes, Messi can simply be seen going about his business in the penalty area – check it out:
So, whether or not you think Messi left his heart in Barcelona, he was bemoaning his own lukewarm performance or something else is going on, there’s no denying that something looked a little off.
Maybe it’s even that Messi knows better than most that Champions League ties are never won in the first leg. Either way, it would just be great to see him smiling just a little bit more in Paris.
