Jamie Carragher is the latest person to give an opinion on current affairs taking place at Manchester United.

From the outside, it appears that the Red Devils are a club in turmoil, with worrying rumours continuing to surface from within Old Trafford.

Those stories suggest that there is large dressing room unrest, scepticism over Ralf Rangnick's managerial methods and rifts arising within the Old Trafford playing cohort.

That could give evidence as to why the side hasn't lived up to their potential this season, crashing out of both domestic cups, while also dropping points in the league, having drawn three of their last six league matches.

The latest twist in the saga suggests that a power struggle has arisen between summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire over the club's captaincy.

In a report per The Mirror, Journalist David McDonnell claimed that a rift had appeared between the pair, but the centre-back took to Twitter earlier today to extinguish those rumours.

And with issues at Old Trafford continuing to come to the fore, Carragher has delivered a scathing opinion on the situation, which might help the Red Devils restore some calmness at Carrington.

Man Utd made an error re-signing Ronaldo

Writing in a column for The Telegraph on Friday morning, the Liverpool legend has urged United to take a leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson's managerial style and release Ronaldo this summer.

While Ronaldo, who ended a six-match goal drought, scoring against Brighton on Tuesday night, remains the team’s top scorer this season with 15 goals across all competitions.

But for the ex-Liverpool centre-back, the Portuguese star shouldn’t have been brought back to the club in the first place.

“United made a mistake re-signing Ronaldo last summer. It will be a bigger one keeping him next season,” the 44-year-old wrote.

"No single player can ever be bigger than the club. And no one knew that better than Sir Alex Ferguson, who, in 2006, sold one of the Premier League's most prolific goal scorers, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, because he felt the striker's personal hunger for goals was inhibiting the progress of younger, emerging team-mates.

"Who reaped the rewards? Ronaldo, who thrived after Van Nistelrooy's exit."

In the two seasons after the Dutchman's exit, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored a whopping 65 goals across all competitions for the Red Devils.

"Just like Van Nistelrooy 16 years ago, Ronaldo's goal sprees have the capacity to make anyone deemed critical look foolish.

"It does not alter the fact that the next United manager will face the same issues as Rangnick in trying to keep him happy."

But it cannot be ignored that Ronaldo’s frustrations on the pitch have caused a lot of ‘noise’ off it, with the Sky Sports pundit claiming that Ronaldo must accept that much of the outside attention on the club comes from him.

"Whether United win, lose or Ronaldo scores or goes through a mini goal-drought, it is still too much about the CR7 brand and not enough about the team.

"After United's midweek win, Ronaldo posted on social media about 'the noise' around the club. He cannot ignore where a lot of that noise comes from."

Whether the former Real Madrid star will leave at the end of the season remains to be seen, but it is a scathing report from Carragher, who doesn't hold back on the worlds greatest goal scorer.
