Granit Xhaka threatened to overshadow Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Brentford by refusing to accept the captain’s armband.Xhaka, infamously stripped of Arsenal’s captaincy in 2019, didn’t want the armband when teammate Eddie Nketiah offered it to him following Alexandre Lacazette’s substitution. The incident prompted Arsenal fan and TV host Piers Morgan to hit out at the lack of leadership at the Emirates Stadium since Patrick Vieira’s departure in 2005.“Xhaka refusing to take the armband perfectly sums up Arsenal’s biggest problem: since Vieira left, we’ve never had a proper captain/leader,” Morgan wrote on Twitter.

The armband eventually went to Kieran Tierney.

Xhaka turns down armband vs Burnley

Xhaka’s relationship with the captaincy at Arsenal has been frosty to say the least.

While both parties have moved on, his clash with the club’s supporters during a draw against Crystal Palace in October 2019 won’t be forgotten.

It led to Unai Emery stripping the Swiss midfielder of the armband, and he didn’t want it back when it was offered to him during the win against Brentford.

Fans react

Morgan wasn't the only fan to react.

"Man said he doesn't want to deal with that nonsense again," one fan wrote.

Another added: "Xhaka refusing to take the armband from Eddie shows me he won’t be here next season."

Meanwhile, a third said: "Don’t worry Xhaka, none of us want you to have the armband either."

Arsenal secure 2-1 win

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will be more keen to focus on the positives and a 2-1 win against Brentford boosted the Gunners' chances of a top four finish in the Premier League.

Exciting youngsters Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka scored the goals to keep pace with Manchester United and West Ham United.

After the game, Arteta admitted that he used the opening day 2-0 defeat to Brentford to motivate his players.

"That helps and that scar was there and I certainly felt it," he said, per football.london. "I tried to transmit to the players that we should not forget how we felt after that game."
