British fans were left delighted after the women’s curling team earned a gold medal at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Britain, represented by skip Eve Muirhead, Vicky Wright, Jen Dodds, and Hailey Duff, thrashed Japan 10-3 in the gold medal match.

Their victory replicated the gold medal won by Rhona Howie’s team at Salt Lake City in 2002.

Muirhead was key to Britain’s success, scoring an impressive four in the seventh end to effectively clinch the title.

The 31-year-old was competing at her fourth Olympics, having experienced a number of near misses at previous Games.

She finished with a bronze medal at Sochi 2014, but lost in the third-place play-off at PyeongChang 2018. Muirhead was also forced to undergo career-saving hip surgery after the Games in South Korea concluded.

After such a long journey to the top of the podium, Muirhead was visibly emotional as she received her gold medal.

“It’s a dream come true,” Muirhead told BBC Sport. “That was my third semi-final, and the two I lost were hard but I bounced back and here we are.

“We are Olympic champions. It’s such a special moment.”

Wright added: “It doesn’t feel real. We have all had amazing support.

“We cannot thank our friends and family enough for everything they have done, everyone who has been behind us to make this dream become real.”

Fans were equally delighted, with social media users congratulating the British team on Twitter.

“Outstanding result and so well deserved,” one Twitter user wrote. “Perseverance and determination as well as bags of skill. Well done. Enjoy every second.”

Another posted: “So proud of you all and you all deserve this gold medal so much. What a performance that was in the gold medal match.”

Many fans woke up in the middle of the night to watch Britain clinch gold, with one Twitter user writing: “So glad I stayed up to watch the match!! Finally got to sleep at about 5.30, three hours sleep and now a sleep deprived headache.

“BUT I DON’T CARE!! I wouldn’t have changed a thing!! You ladies were superb, huge congratulations on becoming the Olympic Champions!!”

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics come to an end today. After the men’s curling team lost to Sweden in their final, Britain finished the Games with one gold medal and one silver.
