On Sunday night, New Zealand defender Meikayla Moore went viral for all the wrong reasons. The Liverpool women’s player scored a first-half perfect hat-trick of own goals during his country’s SheBelieves Cup match against USA. If that wasn’t embarrassing enough, she was then substituted before half time.Ouch.And it got us thinking: What is the worst individual performance of all time?Scoring a perfect hat-trick of own goals is surely up there but is it the worst? Well, we’ve ranked the 20 worst individual performances of all time - and there are some absolute shockers. Be sure to let us know any that we’ve missed out in the comments section on Facebook!

20. Harry Maguire vs Tottenham (2020)

Back in October 2020, Manchester United lost 6-1 at home to Tottenham and captain Maguire was pretty awful. The moment he pulled down teammate Luke Shaw before Tanguy Ndombele’s equaliser is iconic.

19. Adrian vs Aston Villa (2020)

On the very same day, Liverpool conceded SEVEN goals against Aston Villa. While goalkeeper, Adrian, couldn’t be blamed for all seven goals, his performance was far from convincing.

18. Dejan Lovren vs Tottenham (2017)

Onto another Liverpool player in the form of Lovren. The Croatian was humiliated by Harry Kane in the opening half an hour against Tottenham before being hauled off by Jurgen Klopp after 32 minutes. Liverpool lost 4-1.

17. Ali Dia vs Leeds (1996)

This is a pretty legendary story in Premier League history. Southampton manager, Graeme Souness, was tricked into thinking Dia was the cousin of Ballon d’Or winner George Weah. Despite getting the opportunity to watch him in training, Souness actually brought Dia on for 14 minutes in an actual Premier League game. It soon dawned on him that he’d been the victim of a ruse.

16. Steven Gerrard vs Man Utd (2015)

Gerrard wanted to make an impression in his final appearance against Manchester United. He was angry at being left on the bench and wanted to make Brendan Rodgers regret that decision when he was introduced at half-time. Thirty-eight seconds later, he had been sent off for a stamp on Ander Herrera.

15. Olivier Giroud vs AS Monaco (2015)

“I am really hurting, more than disappointed, it has been embarrassing for me.”

Those were Giroud’s words after he missed a host of sitters as Arsenal lost 3-1 at home to Monaco in their Champions League knockout clash. He was substituted after an hour.

14. Jamie Carragher vs Man Utd (1999)

Scoring multiple own goals but run in the club of Liverpool. That’s because Carragher also ‘achieved’ that feat against Man Utd in 1999. Not a hat-trick but the legendary defender scored two own goals as Liverpool lost 3-2.

13. Alberto Moreno vs Sevilla (2016)

Another Liverpool player but, this time, it came in the Europa League final. Klopp’s side were winning 1-0 before Moreno decided to go AWOL as the Spanish side ran out 3-1 winners.

“It’s impossible to explain what Moreno was doing,” Michael Owen said in the BT Sport studio that night.

12. Tiemoue Bakayoko vs Watford (2018)

You know you’ve had a bad game when your own fans are singing “you’re f**king s**t”. But that’s what happened to Chelsea’s Bakayoko after a nightmare 30 minutes against Watford. He misplaced pass after pass before being sent off - to the delight of the Chelsea fans.

11. Massimo Taibi vs Chelsea (1999)

Taibi is remembered for THAT goal he conceded against Matt Le Tissier after he allowed it through his legs. But it was his performance during the 5-0 defeat to Chelsea that ended his Man Utd career before it had really begun. United were 29-matches unbeaten when Taibi started at Stamford Bridge. His mistake after 27 seconds to allow Gus Poyet to score set the tone for the rest of the match.

10. Oliver Baumann vs Hamburg (2013)

Even Bundesliga’s official YouTube channel dubbed Baumann’s performance for Freiburg vs Hamburg as ‘A Keeper’s Worst Nightmare’. He was at fault for all three goals during a 3-0 loss. Ouch.

9. Stan van den Buys vs Anderlecht (1995)

Don’t worry, Moore. You’re not the first player to score a HAT-TRICK of own goals. It was done by Van den Buys while playing for Germinal Ekeren against Anderlecht. The reason this isn’t higher up in the list is that it’s not exactly well known and we think it’s very harsh to credit the third own goal as his.

8. Jan Bednarek vs Manchester United (2021)

Imagine losing 9-0, scoring an own and getting sent off in the same match. That happened to Bednarek at Old Trafford last year. But spare a thought for the Fantasy Football manager who Triple Captained him…

7. Emmanuel Eboue vs Wigan (2008)

Being substituted as a substitute is embarrassing at the best of times. But Eboue’s performance for Arsenal against Wigan was deserving of such humiliation. He was so bad that he was booed by the home fans.

6. Jonathan Walters vs Chelsea (2013)

Scoring three own goals is disastrous but scoring two own goals and missing a penalty in the same game isn’t much better. Walters did that as Stoke lost 4-0 to Chelsea. Now that’s a bad day at the office.

It was hard to rank a Premier League performance worse than Eboue’s, but scoring two own goals and missing a penalty in the same game is just ludicrous.

Chelsea smashed Stoke 4-0 as well, just to rub salt in the wounds of the Irish striker.

5. David Luiz vs Manchester City (2020)

It was the return of football following the coronavirus pandemic and Luiz simply wasn’t ready for it.

He started on the bench after Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, said “there are a few things that happened in recent weeks”.

However, an injury meant Luiz was brought on in the 20-minute. It was his mistake that allowed City to open the scoring before he was sent off in the second half, conceding a penalty in the process. He lasted just 24 minutes of playing time.

4. Jonathan Woodgate vs Athletic Bilbao (2005)

Real Madrid waited more than a year for Woodgate’s debut due to a series of injuries. When it arrived, he managed to score an own goal and get himself sent off. There was no coming back from that.

3. Martin Palermo vs Colombia (1999)

We’ve spoken about scoring three own goals but how about missing three penalties? Argentine Palermo did just that as his nation lost (ironically) 3-0 to Colombia at Copa America.

2. Loris Karius vs Real Madrid (2018)

He may well have been concussed but we simply couldn’t leave Karius’ Champions League final performance off this list. With the scores level at 0-0, Karius rolled the ball onto Karim Benzema’s foot to give Real Madrid the lead. He then allowed Gareth Bale’s speculative effort to slip through his hands to seal another Champions League triumph for the Spanish side. On the biggest stage of them all.

1. Meikayla Moore vs USA (2022)

We’re sorry but scoring a first half perfect hat-trick before being substituted in the 40th-minute goes down as the worst individual performance of all time. It’ll take some beating, too.
