Tottenham Hotspur ‘will be looking at’ Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie

Tottenham Hotspur ‘will be looking at’ Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie amid increasing speculation over his future, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Antonio Conte is believed to be in the market for reinforcements along his backline after signing Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur to bolster his attack and midfield in the January transfer window.

What is the latest news involving Hincapie?

Hincapie only joined Leverkusen last August after putting in several eye-catching displays for boyhood club Independiente and then Argentine outfit Club Atletico Talleres, whose president dubbed him ‘the best young defender in Latin America’.

However, the highly-rated 20-year-old could be on the move again in just a few months’ time after attracting the attention of several heavyweight sides across the continent.

According to Football Insider, the likes of AC Milan, Roma, Napoli, Sevilla and Zenit St. Petersburg are all interested in snapping up Hincapie, while Spurs are already plotting a summer deal.

The Ecuador international helped his side to third spot in the South American qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar and has carried his impressive national team form into club competitions.

As per WhoScored, Hincapie has won 2.5 aerial duels, while also making 2.5 clearances and 0.8 blocks per league game this season, placing him in the top three for each metric when compared to his teammates.

What has O’Rourke said about Hincapie?

The 6 foot ace has contributed two goals and one assist in 22 appearances across all competitions for Leverkusen to date, playing a pivotal part in their rise to third place in the Bundesliga standings.

And O’Rourke believes Hincapie’s dominant displays will have seen him pop up on Tottenham’s radar, as well as multiple other potential suitors.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think Spurs will be looking at him, as are several other clubs across Europe. AC Milan, Sevilla, I think Zenit St. Petersburg as well. There’s quite a big list of clubs who are looking at Hincapie.”

Who else could Tottenham sign?

It appears as though Conte is determined to sign a left-footed centre-back ahead of next season, with all of his current options favouring the opposite side.

Did Tottenham Hotspur sign Moussa Sissoko on transfer deadline day in 2016?

A recent report in The Telegraph claimed that a shortlist made up of Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni, Sven Botman of Lille and RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol have also been identified as possible targets.

With full-back Ben Davies currently deputising on the left-hand side of Tottenham’s three-man defence, a natural option for that role seems to be high up on Conte’s wish list.
