Manchester United's 4-2 victory over Leeds on Sunday was huge.

Not only did it come against their rivals, but the three points took them into the top four as they maintained their unbeaten run in the Premier League, which now stands at six matches.

And it felt as though many United players were silencing their critics.

QUIZ: How much do you know about Man Utd's first-team stars?

Many members of the squad have come under fire for their lacklustre performances this season - notably three of the four goalscorers at Elland Road in the form of Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Fred.

There have also been multiple reports regarding Maguire's captaincy and the forming of numerous groups amongst Ralf Rangnick's squad.

But is this the victory that will silence all those reports and galvanise the team?

Yes, if Fernandes' post-match interview is anything to go by.

Bruno addressed recent social media rumours that he purposely took a dig at Maguire in an Instagram post. He uploaded an image of him in-between centre-back's Eric Bailly and Raphael Varane with the caption: "Feeling very safe between these two".

Fans immediately suggested that it was an intentional slight on fellow defender Maguire.

However, Fernandes responded after the Leeds victory with a strong statement that has United fans calling for him to be made captain once again.

"Honestly, I think people question everything at this club. Every week we have a new story about something," Fernandes told Premier League Productions.

"I posted a photo on Instagram where I was [pictured] with Rapha [Varane] and Eric [Bailly] and I said, ‘I feel very secure in the middle with these two’, meaning, ‘security’ like if [someone] comes they are like my bodyguards. And people were complaining [that] I was throwing something at Maguire.

"But Maguire was not the only defender who was not in the photo. Lindelof was not in the photo, Phil Jones was not in the photo.

"People want to complain and want to make stories around us, but the most important [thing] is that we stick together and do our jobs on the pitch.

"Obviously, everyone is really happy with H [Harry Maguire] because it’s really tough being in his place in the last period.

"Honestly, we all have bad games. And when we don’t win it’s not because H is not playing well, or Bruno is not playing well, it’s because the team is not playing well and it’s not performing in the right way.

"For us inside the dressing room is not where we blame someone, but [to] understand how we come out of bad situations."

United's attention will turn to the actual Champions League - rather than trying to qualify for it - on Wednesday when they face Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Both Fernandes - and Maguire - will have to be at their very best if they want to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.
