Guerrilla Games and miHoYo teamed up to bring the Horizon series’ protagonist Aloy to Genshin Impact back in 2021, but unfortunately, she never caught on as a major name in the gacha title.
With Horizon Forbidden West being one of the most anticipated games on PS5 since it was originally confirmed, it’s interesting to look back at why the Aloy character ‘didn’t work’ as part of Genshin Impact.
There are a number of reasons why the popular PlayStation character didn’t catch on with the gacha audience, and we’ll take a look at them some of them here.
Here are the reasons that we believe Aloy did not work as a character in Genshin Impact.
Genshin impact Aloy Crossover
Aloy was released as the only free 5-star character in the game, but despite this, she was not a major element of the game.
Players just did not seem to get invested in the character, as she did not have any queests that affected the main story, nor did she have Hangout event quests.
Fans of the game discussed the issues behind Aloy as part of a large thread on the r/Genshin_Impact subreddit back in 2021 before she was even released. The biggest issue with the character was, as noted, how she just didn’t seem to make a huge impact (pun intended) in the game itself.
One Redditor summed up the situation quite well, writing: “Most people that have an issue with her, from what I gather, [is] because her existence messes with the lore and world.
“Personally I don’t really care about any of that, but I’m curious to see how they incorporate her. Besides, a freebie is a freebie.”
Another player speculated that the crossover was due to the deal between Genshin and PlayStation. Right now, the PS4 and PS5 are the only major gaming consoles that you can get Genshin Impact on, with players desperately awaiting a release on Nintendo Switch.
They wrote: “Both main characters and one major character (so far, that we know of) are dimension Travelers, one of which is basically an overpowered isekai protag type that brings random sh*t from more modern worlds for some reason (barbara knowing what an idol is and trying to be one is because Alice showed her an idol magazine, as one example (the KFC wings are also tied up with Alice’s lore).
“Plus Horizon’s lore has a lot of parallels in general theme to the khaen’riah situation so of all the characters from PS exclusive games? I think she’s not a bad choice, considering it’s likely that sony pressed them for a collab in exchange for allowing the cross-save stuff.”
Hopefully, if miHoYo decides to have more crossover characters in the game going forward then they will be able to have a bigger impact (pun intended) on the overall meta of the gacha great.
