Newcastle United want to sign "A-list stars" this summer, says transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Magpies became the richest club in the world following their Saudi Arabian-backed £305m takeover and look set to splash the cash in the next transfer window.

How did Newcastle's last transfer window go?

Pretty well. The Tyneside outfit brought in Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood, Dan Burn and Matt Targett to give themselves a massive boost in their bid for Premier League survival.

Trippier has impressed particularly, while Guimaraes has arrived with high expectations after joining from Lyon in an initial £35m deal.

Prior to his foot injury, which could now see him miss the rest of the season, Trippier scored in consecutive wins against Everton and Aston Villa to help Newcastle climb up the table. Ultimately, those two goals alone have probably made the England international worth his £12m transfer fee and then some.

All things considered, Eddie Howe can be pleased with how his first transfer window as Newcastle manager went.

What has Jones said about Newcastle's next transfer window?

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that Newcastle's plan in the summer is to target A-list stars, but the transfer insider has not ruled out the club snapping up hot prospects, too.

"They obviously want to sign A-list stars," Jones said to GMS. "But on the flip of it, they know that they have to also be in that market where you're signing emerging talent. I think they want a mix of both, to be honest."

Who has been linked with a summer move to Newcastle?

In terms of big names, one player who Newcastle have been linked with is Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller, who is out of contract next year.

According to journalist Christian Falk, both Newcastle and Everton are interested in signing the 32-year-old, with Bayern seemingly in no rush to tie him down to a new deal.

Muller has been the German giants' main provider this season, racking up over 15 assists in the Bundesliga.

The 110-cap Germany international is also, of course, a goalscorer, netting 224 times for his boyhood club.

If Bayern do not want him, then there is no doubt that Muller will have plenty of suitors after his signature. Whether he would be interested in a move to Newcastle, though, remains to be seen, but targeting a player of that calibre is certainly something that is likely to please fans.
