Journalist Dean Jones is ‘sure’ that Manchester United ‘are looking at’ RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Red Bull Arena in recent weeks after putting in some eye-catching displays for the Bundesliga outfit.

What is the latest news involving Nkunku?

According to ESPN, United have added Nkunku to ‘their list of summer targets’ after interim manager Ralf Rangnick urged the club’s hierarchy to step up their interest in the versatile star.

The report goes on to state that the Red Devils have prioritised improving their midfield options when the market re-opens as they expect Paul Pogba to depart as a free agent when his current contract expires in June.

However, United are set to face extensive competition for Nkunku’s signature as his outstanding displays have reportedly attracted the attention of a host of Europe’s top teams.

Real Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal and local rivals Manchester City are also listed as potential suitors for the former France Under-21 international, while fresh reports credit Paris Saint-Germain with an interest.

German outlet Bild, claim that the Ligue 1 giants are keen to bring Nkunku back to his boyhood club after letting him depart in July 2019 and are set to face competition for his signature from United.

But both PSG and the Old Trafford outfit will have to pay a significant sum to prise the in-form star away from Leipzig as it’s believed they are set to demand a whopping €75 million (£62.5m).

What has Jones said about Nkunku?

Rangnick is known to be a fan of Nkunku having signed him for Leipzig in his final months as the club’s director of football.

And Jones is confident that the German tactician’s new side are keeping close tabs on the attacker, yet he believes a return to PSG is ‘the most obvious path’ for him to take.

He told GiveMeSport: “I'm sure they are looking at Nkunku; I just find it hard to believe he won't end up back at PSG. That's the most obvious path for him to take. He's been a star all season, even in a team that hasen't always been doing well.”

Would Nkunku be a good signing?

Nkunku has showcased his ability to play in a pressing-orientated side throughout his time at Leipzig, meaning he could be a good fit for the new direction United are going in under Rangnick.

And the level of interest he is receiving comes as little surprise, given his recent exploits.

In 33 appearances across all competitions this season, Nkunku has bagged 22 goals and laid on a further 13 assists while featuring on either flank and through the middle of the pitch.

With Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata all approaching the final few months of their existing contracts, Nkunku could be the ideal candidate to replace them.
