Winger Demarai Gray has been a ‘real revelation’ for Everton this season, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The 25-year-old joined the Goodison Park outfit for just £1.7 million from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen in the summer and has put in a string of impressive performances since.

What is the latest news involving Gray?

Gray established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in English football when he registered eight goal contributions in 41 Championship appearances as a teenager throughout 2014/15 for boyhood club Birmingham City.

His impressive exploits prompted Leicester City to snap him up six months later, handing him a four-and-a-half-year contract halfway through their title-winning campaign.

Upon his arrival at the King Power Stadium, Gray revealed it had been his ‘dream’ to play in the Premier League since he started playing football, but things didn’t go to plan for him at the Midlands outfit.

Throughout his five-year stay with the Foxes, the former England Under-21 international failed to start over 23 top-flight fixtures in a single season, often having to settle for cameo appearances off the substitute’s bench.

In total, Gray racked up just 13 goals and 17 assists in 169 outings for Leicester across all competitions before joining a growing list of English players to ply their trade in Germany.

However, the skilful forward only lasted six months at Leverkusen, with former Everton manager Rafael Benitez bringing him back to his homeland in what has proved to be a bargain deal.

What has Brown said about Gray?

Benitez was relieved of his duties in January following a disastrous run of form that has left the Toffees in a relegation battle, yet despite the club’s struggles, Gray has continued to shine.

The attacker has racked up nine goal contributions in 24 games for his new side throughout 2021/22, and Brown believes he has been ‘amazing’ value for money.

In an exclusive interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “Gray has been amazing for the money they signed him for.

“He gives them some pace and some directness, and he's got a bit of trickery about him that causes defenders problems. And he's been a real revelation for Everton this season.”

How good has Gray been?

According to WhoScored, Gray - who is now valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt - has been Everton’s second-best performer this term, achieving a season rating of 6.91, behind only star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

And when taking a closer look at his underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why.

Gray has averaged 2.1 shots, 1.5 key passes, 1.8 dribbles and 0.9 crosses per league game this term, placing him in the top three for each metric when compared to his teammates.

The attacker has been absent from Everton's last two matchday squads, though, and recently uploaded a cryptic post on Instagram.
