Olympique Marseille have knocked FK Qarabag out of the Europa Conference League after they defeated the Azerbaijani club 0-3 on Thursday night.

Pape Gueye opened the scoring in the first half for Marseille, before former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and Konrad de La Fuente followed up with goals later in the second term.

The trio of goals saw the French side, who currently sit in the second rung of the Ligue 1 table, cruise through to the next round of the tournament.

But while it seems like it was plain sailing for the Olympiens, a strange incident occurred during the 34th minute where striker Ibrahima Wadji appeared to level the scores.

Steaming into the six-yard box to get on the end of a cross, the 26-year-old rose to meet the ball but blatantly uses his hand to slam the football into the net, akin to a smash shot in volleyball.

In bewildering circumstances, the referee allowed the goal to stand with the Marseille players up in arms that the Senegalese player had clearly used his hand to score the goal.

While most referees would turn to VAR to review such a contentious decision, the rules of the Europa Conference League state that video match referees are not allowed until the final of the tournament.

Nevertheless, Marseille continued their protests and were furious that the goal was allowed to stand.

But soon after, Wadji and his teammates produced an excellent display of sportsmanship with the striker seen in the footage consulting with his manager, Gurban Gurbanov, with both seeming to agree that the goal should be reversed.

Take a look at the incident in the video below...

Fair play to the striker and his captain, Maksim Medvedev, who both then approached the referee owning up to the handball.

While we don’t condone cheating in the first place, it is a great piece of sportsmanship from the Qarabag players and manager.
