The future of Everton midfielder Tom Davies ‘is a bit uncertain’

The future of Everton midfielder Tom Davies ‘is a bit uncertain’ following another frustrating season, according to football journalist Paul Brown.

Davies has slipped down the pecking order at Goodison Park in recent years and may have already played his last game for his boyhood club due to several injury issues.

What is the latest news involving Davies?

After making his senior debut at the backend of 2015/16, the 23-year-old established himself as one of English football’s most promising engine room operators over the next two campaigns.

Between 2016/17 and 2017/18, Davies made 80 appearances across all competitions for the Toffees, including 38 Premier League starts as he became a mainstay in the first-team squad.

He also won the majority of his 23 caps for England’s Under-21’s during the same period but has failed to kick on since then, regressing into a bit-part role at Everton.

Although Davies did enjoy a relatively productive 2019/20 season, the last 18 months, in particular, have been extremely frustrating for him.

The arrival of Allan saw the youngster feature from the off on just 17 occasions in the top-flight last term, while fitness struggles have seen him rack up just 339 minutes in all competitions this time around.

And Davies – who is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt – revealed that he won’t be back in action until next season after undergoing surgery on a hamstring problem.

What has Brown said about Davies?

Everton’s spending was limited to just £1.7m last summer due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, although they did bring in several players during the January transfer window.

Nevertheless, Brown believes the Merseyside outfit could look to cash in on their academy graduate when the market reopens as ‘they’d realise a lot of profit on him’.

He told GiveMeSport: “The problem for him, and the club, is that because of their FFP situation, and him being a homegrown player, I think if ever there was a decent offer to come in for Tom Davies, they’d realise a lot of profit on him because he’s come through the ranks there.

“They haven’t had to pay a fee. So, I think his future is a bit uncertain, really.”

Does Davies have an Everton future?

With Allan set to turn 32 next term, Fabian Delph approaching the end of his current contract and Jean-Philippe Gbamin also facing an uncertain future, Davies could yet have an opportunity to revive his Everton career.

The arrival of new manager Frank Lampard may reward him with a fresh start to prove his worth and finally begin to fulfil the potential he showed earlier on in his career.

If Everton decide to keep hold of Davies this summer, then next season could prove to be pivotal in where his long-term future lies.
