Man Utd's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is responsible for one of the best red cards in PL history

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer picked up an epic red card for Manchester United vs Newcastle back during the 1997/98 season.

It may not have worked out for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager of Manchester United but he'll always be a club legend at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian was sacked as manager earlier this season after a string of poor results left the club detached from the top-four.

He won't go down as one of the greatest managers in the club's history but United fans will never forget what Solskjaer achieved as a player.

In 11 seasons, the striker won 12 trophies at United. During that time, he scored 126 goals in 366 appearances in all competitions.

Of course, he will always be remembered for THAT goal in the Champions League final in 1999.

Man Utd were trailing Bayern Munich 1-0 in injury-time at the Camp Nou. Teddy Sheringham equalised in the 91st-minute before Solskjaer won it two minutes later.

Mention Solskjaer to any United fan and that moment will be the first that comes into their mind.

But, on Solskjaer's 49th birthday, we wanted to remember a slightly more niche moment in his career.

It came during the 1997/98 season and it sums up his passion and desire for United to succeed.

During a home match against Newcastle. The scores were level at 1-1 in the final few minutes of the match when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were caught on the break.

Rob Lee broke free and looked set to win the match for Newcastle. However, Solskjaer sprinted back and, just outside the penalty area, managed to bring down the Newcastle midfielder.

Unsurprisingly, referee Uriah Rennie showed him a straight red card but Solskjaer’s actions helped earn his side a point.

While he earned a standing ovation from the Old Trafford faithful and a pat on the head by David Beckham, it didn’t exactly go down well with Ferguson.

Speaking on the High Performance podcast, he said: “When I say a fair way I’ve had one sending off and I was so told off by the gaffer [Sir Alex Ferguson], he absolutely slaughtered me in the dressing room, two weeks’ wages fine, against Newcastle.

“I learnt a lesson then… that that’s not the way we want to win at Manchester United, we don’t do it that way.”
