Christian Eriksen returns to football in moving moment during Brentford vs Newcastle

Christian Eriksen has made his return to professional football and it’s a beautiful sight to see.

The sporting world joined in prayer last summer when the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder collapsed during Denmark’s opening game at Euro 2020 against Finland.

The heroic actions of Denmark’s players and medical staff as well as everybody in attendance and around the world who gave their best wishes helped to ensure that a miracle happened that day.

Eriksen’s return to football

Now, having completed a move to Brentford from Inter Milan to return to the sport that he loves so dearly, Eriksen has finally gotten his chance to play top-class football once again.

The 30-year-old was named on Brentford’s bench for their Premier League clash at the weekend having made a handful of friendly appearances to prepare for the big day.

And the moment that the Danish superstar completed his comeback was truly moving as he was introduced by Thomas Frank to a standing ovation in the second-half against Newcastle United.

The fact that the Bees were down to 10 men and trailing their opponents 2-0 thanks to goals from Joelinton and Joe Willock was simply immaterial as Eriksen’s story transcends the sport.

And fittingly, both sets of fans as well as Brentford and Newcastle players came together in applauding Eriksen for making his triumphant return 259 days after that traumatic day in Copenhagen.

The next step in Eriksen’s journey

It felt clear in the weeks and months after it became apparent that Eriksen had fully recovered that he wanted to make a return to football, so it’s great to see his dream coming true this weekend.

And while any footballer might struggle to hit the ground running after eight months away, Eriksen remains one of the most technically-gifted players in the division and will be looking to make a key impact for the Bees.

While Frank’s men have undoubtedly done themselves proud in their first season as a Premier League club, nine defeats in their last 11 league games have pulled them into a relegation battle.

As such, Brentford could certainly use some magic from Eriksen before the 2021/22 season concludes if they are to keep the likes of Norwich City, Watford and Burnley at arm’s length.

However, even in an unlikely world where Eriksen struggles back in the Premier League, seeing him complete a full recovery and return to his beloved sport is something that should always be treasured.
