Liverpool and Chelsea contested the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

The opening 45 minutes was an entertaining affair despite being no goals.

Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount were guilty of missing golden opportunities for Chelsea, while Edouard Mendy produced a quite incredible double save to deny Naby Keita and then Sadio Mane.

Mount then missed another glaring chance minutes into the second 45 minutes. He found himself one-on-one with Caoimhin Kelleher but could only strike the inside of the post.

Liverpool thought they had taken the lead in the 69th minute.

The Reds were given a free-kick roughly 20 yards out and Trent Alexander-Arnold found Sadio Mane at the back post.

Mane headed the ball across goal and Joel Matip could not miss from just a few yards out.

However, the goal was controversially ruled out by VAR. Despite not touching the ball, Virgil van Dijk was in an offside position when the free-kick was swung in and was adjudged to have interfered with play. Watch the moment below...

Van Dijk looked perplexed when referee Stuart Atwell went over to the pitch-side monitor and he was not happy when the goal was ruled out. He would go on to continue his protests when Atwell blew to signal the end of normal time.

There were countless more chances during the remainder of regulation time.

Kai Havertz had a goal correctly ruled out for offside, while Mendy and Kelleher both produced heroic saves to keep out Van Dijk and Romelu Lukaku respectively in stoppage-time.
