Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall: Tony Bellew's perfect reaction

  • Josh Mann

One of the most controversial fights took place on Saturday night as undisputed light welterweight champion Josh Taylor took on Jack Catterall.

The fight went the full 12 rounds with Catterall knocking his opponent down early in the eighth.

Taylor was put under pressure throughout the fight and it seemed as if he would need to knock Catterall out if he was to win.

Both fighters saw a point deducted off of their score, Catterall for holding Taylor in a headlock in round 10 and Taylor for throwing punches after the bell had gone.

Eventually, the controversial result was confirmed, with the judges scoring the fight 113-112 to Catterall, and 114-111 and 113-112 in favour of Taylor.

Catterall was devastated by the result, which showed as he refused to give a TV interview in the immediate aftermath.

Many popular figures in the boxing world have condemned the decision, in particular former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew.

Bellew, in a set of two tweets posted over the weekend, first proposed that ‘officials and referees need to explain themselves after the fights.’

He also questioned why fighters can be interviewed after being ‘punched in the head for 36 mins’, but officials can’t explain their tactics and thoughts.

In his second tweet of the night, he went on to say ‘every official should be held accountable’ and believes that the officials are ruining Catterall’s career with the decision that was made.

Dillian Whyte also took to Twitter to vent his frustration, simply tweeting: “Disgusting.”

The uproar among fans inside the venue and on social media was evident, with many believing British boxing is in terrible state.

It was Catterall’s first defeat of his career, whilst Taylor remains unbeaten and holds his four belts… by the skin of his teeth.
